EYES ON THE PLATE (2021)

My first piece of conceptual art was made based off the feeling of uncanniness. As humans, we are compelled to project our own nature onto nature; so, we will often recognize faces where there are none. The eyes on the plate invoke the idea that we are looking at someone, even though we're not.

By far the most difficult challenge of this art piece was to create the eyeballs realistically. Since, it was not my intention to work with horror or gore here, I didn't include blood nor optic nerves in the image. The specularity of the eye actually implies a touch of fantasy, given that our eyes dry out when we die.
The actual shading used a procedural circle to map the transparency of the mesh—mostly transparent within the cornea and mix the other shaders, which were essentially free image textures I got from a google search. There was also the use of subsurface scatering to give a more fleshy and organic look to the eye.
